Why We Focus On The Wrong Goals In Life

Goal Setting

As you may have noticed, there hasn’t been a single thing posted on this website. No sign or trace of me at all and you may be wondering why. I can tell you that I have been focusing all on the wrong goals in my life. How many of you can relate to this?

Just picture this. You are someone that has a clear path or idea on what you want to be and you work hard towards those things. You spend hours working on that passion of yours only to have a guilty feeling in your chest. Every day, you think about those outside voices that you hear. You know, the voices that tell you that what you’re doing is not good enough. The voices that tell you that you’re not going to get far based on the path that you’re taking.

Sooner or later, you start to think about it and those outside voices slowly come inside voices and you begin to bring yourself down. You know the kind of voices that I’m referring to.

“I’m not good enough to do this!” “Maybe I should just quit while I can and try something else.” “This process takes too long and there is no way that I can get through this at all.”

All of this keeps you from reaching your fullest potential and we accept it. It’s so hard to focus on what’s right. We focus on the wrong goals! The kind of goals that let’s other people know that we’re doing a good job when inside, we are miserable.

The “Wrong” Goals That We Follow

The goal that we mistakenly try to achieve is simply “success”. The reason I say this is because we often have the wrong definition when it comes to this word.

When you think of the word “success” what typically comes to mind? You may be thinking of money, fame, fortune, happiness, and freedom, which is completely fine if you’re thinking about the outside. In my eyes, only two of those words really matters. Can you guess what two words I’m thinking of? If you guessed happiness and freedom, then you are correct.

If you take a look at money, you can see that it is related to status. The more money you have, the more attractive you are going to be to others and that your life will be better because of it. What if I told you that that wasn’t necessarily the case?

According to a study from Purdue University, the ideal income point is $95,000 for life evaluation and $60,000-$75,000 for emotional well-being. If that’s the case, then why do so many people try to aim for money as an indicator of success? Well, most of it has to do with materialistic things and social status. All of your friends would think you are so cool if you posted all of the amazing trips that you’ve been too or if you have expensive clothing on. True, but what would you think of yourself? Would you be happy doing all of this just for other people? The answer is no.

The “Right” Goals To Focus On

The right goals to focus on are the goals that keep you moving in life. You want to continue to better yourself every day and find what you truly love doing. Money, fame, and fortune should come after your happiness and freedom. If you’re happy doing what you’re doing, then you have all the freedom in the world (technically). Your mental health is good and you feel more energized.

Ask yourself, what do I want to achieve in life? Why do I want to achieve this? Is it to better myself and to have an amazing life or am I trying to get a lot of money to impress other people? Focus on yourself! Do what makes you happy and work hard to improve yourself every day.

What’s the point of living if you don’t have a purpose? What’s the point of making a lot of money from a job you dislike only to show it off to others? If you ask me, I’d rather have a life where I don’t make as much money as others, but enjoy what I do. When you enjoy it, you would work even if you didn’t get paid for it. That’s a lot like working on yourself to become a better person.

It costs money and it takes a lot of time, but you know that it will make you feel like a rockstar later on.
